The Mystery Behind ‘The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’ May Finally be Solved

The identity of the ‘Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’ appears to have finally been uncovered, as the song’s original creators have come forward with evidence that they produced the track.

For years, internet users have searched for the origins of a new wave song recorded from a German radio show in the mid-1980s. In 2007, a user named Lydia shared the song on online forums; it had been recorded onto cassette by her brother Darius years before. Known as ‘Like the Wind’ based on its opening lyrics, the track quickly became an internet enigma, inspiring YouTube videos and even a subreddit called ‘The Mysterious Song’ dedicated to solving the mystery.

On November 4, Reddit user Marijn1412, an active member of this online community, announced that the song had been identified as ‘Subways of Your Mind’ by the German band FEX. Marijn1412 said that he came across former members of FEX while researching a music event for emerging bands that was organized in the 1980s by a public broadcaster in northern Germany.

Marijn1412 explained that after he informed the musician that the song was actually a well-known “lost song,” the musician asked him to hold off on making it public until he could speak with his former bandmates. He added that, in the meantime, the song was registered with GEMA, the German performance rights organization, and word eventually spread. He said that he was pleased to announce that the band members had agreed for him to go public with the information.

The former band members were unaware of the extensive search for their track. Speaking to the German publication Tz, 68-year-old Michael Hädrich, the keyboardist, guitarist, and backing vocalist, said that they hadn’t noticed the internet phenomenon at all, largely because the song’s title was not known online, making it unconnected to their work.

He said that only then did the musician point out to him that he hadn’t realized the song ‘Subways of Your Mind’ was actually the “Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.”

Hädrich stated that he and the band have extensive evidence proving the song is theirs, including materials from the original recording session, witness statements, and live performance recordings.

With the song’s newfound popularity, he said that the members of FEX are planning a reunion to re-record ‘Subways of Your Mind’ and shoot a music video.

Earlier this year, another mysterious song was identified with the help of Reddit. The ’80s track, initially dubbed ‘Everyone Knows That,’ was traced back to its feature in an old adult film.

In 2021, a snippet of the catchy pop song was uploaded to YouTube and shared on the WatZatSong forum in hopes of identifying it. The track, also known as ‘Ulterior Motives,’ gained its own subreddit community, and over time, the search led to a group of rights holders from the mid-1980s.

One user, named south_pole_ball, discovered that a songwriter named Christopher Booth, who had worked on p**n films, was listed as a contributor. Reddit users then combed through his entire body of work and finally identified ‘Everyone Knows That’ exactly one hour, seven minutes, and 31 seconds into the 1986 film Angels of Passion.
