‘The Penguin’ Producer Says ‘Batman’ Movie Vibrates Against New Show
In a recent interview with SFX magazine, Dylan Clark, the producer of ‘The Penguin’, discussed the relationship between the new series and Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’. Although ‘The Penguin’ is a spin-off, Clark assured viewers that it can be enjoyed without having seen ‘The Batman’.
He explained that while the show and the film are connected, Reeves describes their relationship as “vibrating against” each other, allowing each project to stand alone.
Clark emphasised that the series offers its own unique storylines and character development, making it accessible to a broad audience. Set against the backdrop of Gotham’s chaos following the Riddler’s Flood, the show focuses on Oz Cobblepot, played by Colin Farrell, as he navigates the criminal underworld amid the city’s turmoil.
Matt Reeves, who spoke with SFX about his vision for the show, described it as a Scarface-style gangster narrative. He pitched the idea to Farrell, detailing a story centred on the power vacuum created by Falcone’s downfall.
Reeves highlighted how the Penguin, often seen as a mere joke, is driven by a deep-seated ambition for power. This ambition, along with the personal void it fills, will be a central theme of the series.
Network executives were captivated by the concept of exploring the Penguin’s rise to power, and they are enthusiastic about moving forward with the project.
