Tia Carrere Reveals ‘Easter Eggs’ in Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake
Longtime fans may expect a lot of nostalgic moments from the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ remake, while new viewers should expect a different perspective.
At ‘Unforgettable: The 22nd Annual Asian American Awards’ in December recently, Tia Carrere, who played Nani in the 2002 animation hit, expressed her excitement about returning to a new role for the live-action remake. The actress emphasized that younger audiences will get to see the story for the first time, while lovers of the original movie may anticipate subtle references and “Easter eggs.”
Carrere called the new cast members “fantastic” and “awesome,” praising Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani, and Zach Galifianakis. Kahiau Machado plays David Kawena in the film, which was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who is best known for ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’. In addition to Amy Hill, Billy Magnussen, and Courtney B. Vance, Carrere plays the part of the social worker Mrs. Kekoa.

The film centres on the relationship between an extraterrestrial named Stitch—who was created to be destroyed—and a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo. As they struggle with social workers and alien assailants, they end up becoming an unexpected family.
Carrere was excited about the film’s live-action and visual effects combination, stating that it will have a striking visual aesthetic. She also commended Fleischer Camp’s direction, pointing out that in Marcel the Shell, he successfully struck a balance between humour and poignant storytelling. For viewers of all ages, she thinks this mix will make Lilo & Stitch a heartwarming and enjoyable experience.
On 23rd May 2025, the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ will be released in theatres.
