In a recent interview with Sight and Sound magazine of the British Film Institute, Tom Cruise remembered meeting with renowned filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to talk about the project. Tom Cruise, who saw Kidman as a strong and talented actress, recommended her for the part of Alice Hartford during those early discussions. The married couple later played a tormented husband and wife, negotiating issues of betrayal and desire.
Tom Cruise characterised the filming process as intensely immersive and highly collaborative. According to him, the original script was more of a concept, and in order to perfect the tone, sections were repeatedly reworked, filmed, and reshot. He claimed that the quiet, small set gave him and Kidman the freedom to fully inhabit their roles.
