Tones & I Joins YouTube’s One Billion Club with ‘Dance Monkey’
When a song makes it to YouTube’s one billion club, it’s a big deal. ‘Senorita’ by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello just found its spot there. And now, they’re joined by Tones & I, with her chart topping hit, ‘Dance Monkey’. It’s a tune that everyone’s fallen in love with from the minute they heard her surreal voice. So, it’s no surprise that the song’s made it this far.
The video, we must admit, is rather bizarre but fun nonetheless. It features Tones And I, aka Toni Elizabeth Watson, dressed as an elderly man. She (or he?) struts out of a retirement home and starts grooving down at a golf course with pals.
It’s no simple feat to achieve, and as expected, the singer was over the moon upon hearing the news. “I can’t believe ‘Dance Monkey’ has hit 1 billion views! I had so much fun making this video. Thank you to everyone for watching,” said Tones And I.
Penned down in less than 30 minutes, it wasn’t long before the song found itself standing beside major acts like Post Malone, Billie Eilish and more. From starting off as a busker, much like the song describes, Tones & I has emerged as one of the most unique new artists over the past couple of months.
What Else Does Tones & I Have in Store?
In fact, a little after ‘Dance Monkey’, Tones & I once again took the world by storm with her angsty, rather heartbreaking track ‘Bad Child’. Though it hasn’t seen the kind of success that ‘Dance Monkey’ has, this tune did have its moment under the spotlight.
Earlier in the year, the artist planned to set off on tour in Australia, across the U.S and Europe. But her dates had to be rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I must cut short the rest of my first tour over here, as the majority of the remaining shows have already been cancelled due to government policy and I do not want to subjugate anyone to making a choice between coming to see me and their health,” Tones & I explained.
For now, she has a huge reason to celebrate. For an up and coming artist to join the one billion club is almost unheard of. Especially within such a short span of time.
