Unreleased Michael Jackson Music Discovered in Abandoned Storage Unit

Unreleased Michael Jackson music has been uncovered in an abandoned storage unit, according to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter. The discovery includes several cassette and DAT tapes containing unheard recordings by the late pop icon.

The tapes were found by former highway patrol officer Gregg Musgrove, who stumbled upon the treasure while exploring a friend’s newly purchased abandoned storage unit in Van Nuys, California. The unit had previously belonged to singer and producer Bryan Loren.

A total of 12 tapes, dating between 1989 and 1991, were uncovered, featuring 15 unreleased tracks. While some of the songs had been teased or leaked in snippets, others were completely unknown. Among the discoveries is a collaboration with LL Cool J titled ‘Truth On Youth’. Earlier this year, the rapper confirmed they had worked on music together, but he described the tracks as not being “good enough” for release.

Musgrove reached out to Jackson’s estate with the tapes, but the estate declined to purchase them. In a letter to Musgrove, the estate clarified that while it does not claim ownership of the physical tapes, the rights to the recordings and compositions remain with MJJP Records. The estate further confirmed that the tapes are not master copies, as the original masters are securely stored in the estate’s vaults. This means the tapes cannot be released commercially but may be privately listened to by their owner.

Musgrove and his attorney have announced plans to auction the tapes, targeting Michael Jackson fans and collectors. They are working with four major auction houses and estimate the collection could sell for at least seven figures.

Meanwhile, Michael Jackson’s highly anticipated biopic, Michael, has been delayed to October 2025 in the United States, with international release dates still unconfirmed. Limited details about the film have been shared, though a trailer previewed at CinemaCon in April received positive reactions. The trailer has not yet been made public.
