After a few controversial years, Victoria’s Secret has finally revealed that a “new version” of the catwalk can be expected anytime soon!
“We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in a business both at top of funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show,” Victoria's Secret’s chief financial officer Tim Johnson confirmed.
Victoria’s Secret also added, “We are always innovating and ideating in all spheres of the business to continue to put our customer at the center of all we do and reinforce our commitment to championing women’s voices and their unique perspectives.”
They continued, “As we’ve previously shared, our new brand projection and mission will continue to be our guiding principle. This will lead us into new spaces like reclaiming one of our best marketing and entertainment properties to date and turning it on its head to reflect who we are today.”
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is known to feature big names from the industry to show their lingerie designs. These stars include The Weeknd, Halsey, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Miguel, Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Bruno Mars and Shawn Mendes among many others. Despite that, they have been in trouble for not being inclusive enough and catering to the male gaze by perpetuating unrealistic beauty ideals. This is why the parent company, L Brands, cancelled the fashion show in 2019. They stated that they will find a move to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret.”
In 2018, the then chief marketing officer of the brand, Ed Razek stated that the reason they didn’t cast trans women was because “the show is a fantasy”. The brand faced backlash for the statement. Later, a three part documentary called ‘Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons’ was released. The documentary focused on the rise and fall of the company and threw light on the connections between Leslie Wexner, the former CEO of the company, and Jeffery Epstein.
