To commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary, an improved version of David Bowie’s performance of ‘Starman’ from ‘Top Of The Pops’ in 1972 has been made available.
Bowie made his television debut on the iconic show on 6th July, 1972, delivering his breakthrough song and giving one of the most acclaimed TV performances in history.
In order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the late icon’s fifth studio album, ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars,’ an upgraded video of the song, ‘Starman (Top Of The Pops Version, 2022 Mix),’ which was recorded for the performance, has now also been released.
Check out the new version of the performance below.
‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ was just reissued on limited-edition, half-speed vinyl by Parlophone Records in honour of the album’s 50th anniversary (17th June). According to Musicians Union regulations from 1972, an artist had to re-record their track and, in this case, perform live over top of it in order to appear on ‘Top Of The Pops’.
‘Starman’s’ backing music and vocals, which include an original Bowie ad-lib called ‘Hey Brown Cow,’ were recorded for the performance and were previously unreleased. They were both recorded at London’s Trident Studios.
From the original multi-tracks provided by the BBC, ‘Ziggy Stardust’ co-producer Ken Scott created ‘Starman (Top Of The Pops Version, 2022 Mix)’ earlier this year. To commemorate the recent 50th anniversary of the late icon’s fourth studio album, ‘Hunky Dory,’ Mattel has also unveiled a brand-new Barbie doll that is inspired by David Bowie.
The US toy company initially honoured Bowie in 2019 with a doll that was inspired by the singer’s ‘Space Oddity’ period.
