Watch Harry Styles’ Music Video for New Track ‘As It Was’

Harry Styles has returned with his first new music in three years, ‘As It Was,’ a synth-pop-influenced tune. The song begins with the voice of a child saying, “Come on Harry, we wanna say goodnight to you”, before bursting into a catchy ’80s-style hook. Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, Styles’ longtime collaborators, co-wrote and produced the song.

The song is full of upbeat energy, but it’s a particularly emotional lyrical cut from Styles. “Answer the phone / Harry, you’re no good alone / Why are you sitting at home on the floor? / What kind of pills are you on?” he sings.

Tanu Muino, a Ukrainian director, shot an accompanying music video in London. It portrays Styles in a red sequinned leotard performing diverse routines alongside a woman in a blue version of the same outfit, whom he pulls away from during the course of the song.

“Shooting [Styles] was bittersweet, as it was one of the happiest days of my life, but on the second day of the shoot, my country Ukraine was invaded, so you can imagine the insane emotions we had while shooting,” Muino said in a statement. “Me and my team from Ukraine poured so much love into this video, and you can see it onscreen.”

‘As It Was’ is the first single off Styles’ upcoming third studio album, ‘Harry’s House,’ which he teased with a teaser trailer last month. It will be released on 20th May and will be the follow-up to 2019’s ‘Fine Line.’

Styles teased fans with a series of tweets under the Twitter handle You Are Home, which also had a corresponding Instagram presence, following the album announcement. Last month, he was seen filming a music video on a big bed outside Buckingham Palace.

Styles’ favourite musician, Joni Mitchell, recently gave her approval to the album’s title, ‘Harry’s House.’ Mitchell wrote the song ‘Harry’s House/Centerpiece’ for the 1975 album ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns.’

She retweeted Styles’ announcement of ‘Harry’s House,’ writing: “love the title.” Additional UK and European dates for his ‘Love On Tour’ stadium gigs were just confirmed by the former member of One Direction. The need for more shows arose after a rise in demand in January caused Ticketmaster’s website to crash.

Styles also cancelled the Australian and New Zealand leg of his ‘Love On Tour’ in January, citing “the continuing challenges for international touring”. Styles will be one of the headliners at Coachella this year, with Billie Eilish and Ye, or Kanye West, in April.
