The documentary uncovers how deeply this impersonation affected Tegan’s fanbase. Several fans came forward, sharing their own experiences of being misled by the fake account, dubbed “Fegan.” Some even claimed to have been in long-term communication with the imposter, with one fan alleging a romantic relationship with the fake Tegan.

Tegan reflects on the emotional toll of this experience, stating, “Fake Tegan systematically destroyed my life.” The documentary delves into the nature of parasocial relationships and how early social media platforms contributed to this complex situation.

‘Fanatical’ also raises significant safety concerns for both the band and their fans. The catfish had access to Tegan’s personal information, documents, and health records, as well as the personal details of fans, including their home addresses. This level of intrusion heightened fears within the community.

In one clip, Tegan discusses the invasive nature of the situation, saying, “It introduced the idea that it’s someone we know.” The impact of the catfishing incident left Tegan feeling isolated and distrustful, even towards those closest to her.

The documentary sheds light on how this incident disrupted not only Tegan’s life but also affected her personal relationships, leading to widespread mistrust within the fan community.
