Weeknd Drops His Title Track

Here’s some midweek motivation: a stark image of the Weeknd tilting his head back, a chilling glint in his eyes and, well, blood sitting between his teeth as his lips stretch into a deranged grin. It’s a little unnerving, isn’t it? But, it all adds to the mood of the track, ‘After Hours’ which just dropped, this one feature’s on the artist’s upcoming album with the same title.

Just a few days back, The Weeknd treated us with an official album trailer that was every bit surreal yet sharp. But today, he’s landed with yet another surprise and this time, it’s both his cover art and his release date. ‘After Hours’ is set to drop on March 20th, which is, (gulp) just a month away!

Much like his previous two tracks, ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights, ‘After Hours’ also shares the same sound. But perhaps what sets this track apart from the other two is its interesting transition from a slow, calming melody to much more quicker, funkier beats lining his vocals halfway through the song. Perhaps what also makes the song a lot more tranquil or even just downright hypnotic is his use of ambient sounds. In fact, if you listen to his backing track, it’s reminiscent of the instrumental style used by the ‘XX’ in a number of their songs.

Even his song-writing doesn’t stray to far from what we’ve seen in his previous two tracks. Though this one seems to further emphasize his need to find a sense of happiness and stillness while grappling with a world swimming with temptations. Take a peek at the lyrics and you’ll see what we mean.

Oh, baby

Where are you now when I need you most?

I’d give it all just to hold you close

Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart

Never comin’ through

I was running away from facin’ reality

Wastin’ all of my time on living my fantasies

Spendin’ money to compensate, compensate

‘Cause I want you, baby

The Weeknd has been building up to the album’s release in recent weeks, with live performances on a number of talk shows from Stephen Colbert to Jimmy Kimmel, and now his SNL performance is next in line. He’s set to take the stage on March 7th and if we’re lucky, he might just premiere a new track!

But for now, let’s admire his cover art just one more time!
