While Taylor Swift didn’t score a Grammy win, the singer’s still proven that she has no intentions of slowing down! Just recently, she dropped the trailer of her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, and now, she’s come out with a track that features in it! This one’s called, ‘Only the Young’ and interestingly enough, it draws its inspiration from the current political climate in the US.
Swift revealed that she wrote the track after after seeing so many young people rally for their preferred candidate, during the 2018 midterm elections. “It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard, I saw a lot of young people’s hopes dashed. And I found that to be particularly tragic, because young people are the people who feel the worst effects of gun violence, and student loans and trying to figure out how to start their lives and how to pay their bills, and climate change, and are we going to war — all these horrific situations that we find ourselves facing right now,” she explained.
Swift and co-producer and co-writer Joel Little created the song while in New York City and this one’s quite a refreshing change from the usual themes Swift tends to revolve around: Love, heartbreak, feminism and maybe even a tad bit of revenge if we look back at her ‘Reputation’ era.
What makes this song even better is that it has a strong message to all the youth out there: to stop sitting by the wayside and to involve oneself in politics, to pluck up the courage to voice one’s opinion and vote.
This is also clearly reflected in her lyrics when she sings,
It keeps me awake, the look on your face
/The moment you heard the news/
You’re screaming?inside?and frozen in?time/You did all that you could?do/The game was rigged, the ref got tricked/
They aren’t gonna help us/Too busy helping themselves/They aren’t gonna change this/We gotta do it ourselves/They think that it’s over/But it’s just begun
Soon after dropping this track, Swift dropped her Netflix documentary where her political awakening is clearly evident. This one’s already hit streaming platforms so you might want to place it on the top of your watchlist!
