‘3 Body Problem’ Explain Delay: “To Include Additional Scene”

The highly anticipated Netflix series ‘3 Body Problem’ an adaptation of Cixin Liu’s sci-fi novels, faced a curious delay in its mid-2023 release schedule. While the show had completed post-production, the showrunners, David Benioff, Alexander Woo and D. B. Weiss made the surprising decision to add a single scene before finalising the premiere date.

This pivotal scene, filmed after the series was deemed complete, aimed to address a crucial element missing from the narrative. The show’s first episode hinges on the mysterious suicide of a renowned scientist, leaving viewers grappling with unanswered questions and a sense of intrigue.

The additional scene, featuring a conversation between characters Auggie and Jin at a bar, serves a vital purpose in enriching the story. Despite its seemingly simple premise – a five-minute dialogue in a casual setting – this scene packs a powerful punch.

The decision to delay the release for a seemingly minor addition might raise eyebrows. However, the showrunners were adamant about delivering the best possible viewing experience. Weiss, the series’ scripting head, elaborated on the rationale behind the delay in a conversation he emphasised the importance of this scene in solidifying the narrative and expressed his appreciation for Netflix’s support.
