Björn Ulvaeus has shared that he is currently working on a new musical, this time with the help of artificial intelligence, which he described as “a great tool” for creators. Speaking at the London edition of SXSW on June 4, held across Shoreditch, the ABBA member revealed that the project is nearly three-quarters complete and serves as a creative successor to the group’s hologram-based concert series, ‘ABBA Voyage’.
Ulvaeus explained that using AI in songwriting feels like collaborating with an additional songwriter who brings an immense reference library to the process. He called it an extension of the mind, offering access to ideas and angles he might not have otherwise considered.

Despite this praise, he acknowledged the technology’s limitations—particularly when it comes to writing full songs or lyrics. He said that while the output is often “garbage”, it can sometimes provide the spark needed to move forward creatively, especially when dealing with writer’s block. According to him, AI can offer suggestions for extending lyrics or shifting styles that may lead to fresh inspiration.
Though Ulvaeus had previously voiced concern over the challenges AI poses to the music industry, particularly in terms of fair compensation for artists, he seems to be balancing caution with curiosity. As president of CISAC, a global body representing songwriters and composers, he had earlier warned in a report that creators could lose as much as 25% of their income to AI-generated content by 2028.
