All About Beyoncé’s ‘Skin Lightening’ Controversy

Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, took to Instagram recently to tackle and shut down some negativity floating around about her daughter’s appearance at the premiere of her ‘Renaissance’ World Tour concert film. The 69-year-old shared a video montage of Beyoncé over the years, serving it up with a robust message giving a side-eye to the criticism aimed at the Grammy-winning artist.

The hubbub revolved around claims that Beyoncé had lightened her skin, with a few folks suggesting she was on some mission to look white.

Tina, not one to mince words, fired back, especially honing in on the cover shot of Beyoncé at the Los Angeles premiere. The pic showcased Queen Bey in a custom silver chainmail Versace gown, paired with silver opera gloves and silver-heeled sandals. Her long, platinum-blonde hair, rocking a sleek middle part, also became a hot topic.

In her Instagram post, Tina started by venting her frustration: “Came across this today and decided to post it after seeing all of the stupid ignorant self-hating racist statements about her, lightening her skin, and wearing platinum hair wanting to be white.”

She jumped to her daughter’s defence, explaining that Beyoncé was simply following the theme of her film, Renaissance, which was all about that silver aesthetic. Tina Knowles threw shade at those pushing a “stupid narrative with hate and jealousy,” clarifying that Beyoncé’s silver hair was a bold fashion statement in line with the theme of her concert film.

She brushed off the skin-lightening accusations with a casual “Duh, she wore silver hair to match her silver dress as a fashion statement clown. ALIEN Superstar duh!” – a nod to one of Beyoncé’s bangers from her latest album.

Tina also wasn’t thrilled that a white lady from TMZ had reached out to one of Beyoncé’s hairstylists for a statement on the matter. She stood up for her daughter, highlighting Beyoncé’s positive vibes, like minding her own business, helping others and being a consistent supporter of black women and underdogs.
