America Ferrera and Matthew McConaughey Lead Cast in 'The Lost Bus’

Oscar-nominated actress America Ferrera is set to take on a new role beyond the world of ‘Barbie’, joining forces with Oscar nominee Paul Greengrass and Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey in the upcoming drama ‘The Lost Bus,’ according to exclusive information obtained by Variety.

The film, which is in development, production, and distribution under Apple Original Films, boasts an original script by Brad Inglesby, the mind behind ‘Mare of Easttown.’ Based on Lizzie Johnson's book ‘Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire,’ the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the devastating 2018 California wildfires, claiming over 100 lives and decimating the town of Paradise. 

The movie focuses on the characters Kevin McKay (McConaughey) and Mary Ludwig (Ferrera), a bus driver and teacher who navigate a school bus full of young students through the destructive Camp Fire. Production is scheduled to commence in the upcoming spring.

Ferrera, fresh off her inaugural Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie,’ where she portrayed Gloria, a mother and Mattel employee, is set to make history as the ninth Latina actress ever nominated in the category. She first gained recognition with the 2002 film ‘Real Women Have Curves’ and went on to star in the acclaimed TV series ‘Ugly Betty,’ earning her the lead comedy actress award at the Emmys in 2007.

Not only an accomplished actor with Golden Globe and SAG awards under her belt, Ferrera is also venturing into directing with her debut film, ‘I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,’ an adaptation of the celebrated novel scheduled for production in 2024 and penned by ‘Flamin’ Hot’ writer Linda Yvette Chavez.

Meanwhile, Greengrass, known for his direction of the emotional 9/11 drama ‘United 93’ and other Oscar-nominated films, will be at the helm of ‘The Lost Bus.’ McConaughey, an Oscar winner for his role in ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ joins the cast as Ron Woodroof.
