Amy Winehouse Biopic: Everything You Need to Know

The Amy Winehouse biopic, ‘Back to Black,’ is on its way. Scheduled for release on 12th April 2024 in the UK and Poland, followed by Germany, The Netherlands and Australia on 18th April 2024, this flick has got us all buzzing.
The film, capturing the tumultuous yet genius life of the late Amy Winehouse, started shooting in January 2023. After almost five years in the oven, the project finally found its recipe for success with a director, screenwriter and the fabulous Marisa Abela, of Industry fame, stepping into Amy’s iconic shoes.

Marisa isn’t your usual suspect. The team was dead set on a relative newcomer rather than a pop star, squashing rumours of Lady Gaga taking the spotlight. They also wanted someone with Jewish heritage to keep it real with Amy’s roots. Enter Marisa – Maltese, Libyan, Russian and Polish – ticking all the boxes. Bonus points: she’s got an alto vocal range, so brace yourself for some soulful tunes.

Ryan O’Doherty is set to play Chris Taylor, Amy’s ex who inspired the track ‘Stronger Than Me’ on the album ‘Frank.’ More actors are still in the shadows, but we’ll get the scoop soon enough.

Behind the camera, we’ve got Sam Taylor-Johnson, the maestro behind ‘Nowhere Boy’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ steering the ship. It’s personal for her; she and Amy were buds. The script? Well, that’s the brainchild of BAFTA nominee Matt Greenhalgh, the genius behind the Ian Curtis biopic Control.

Let’s talk style. PC Williams, fresh from HBO’s ‘The Baby’ and Daniel Kaluuya’s ‘The Kitchen,’ is weaving the costume magic with an assist from Ray Woolridge. And for that iconic eyeliner and beehive? Oscar-nominee Daniel Phillips is our man.

Now, about the storyline, the script is under wraps, but with Chris Taylor in the mix, we’re expecting a journey beyond just Amy’s second album. The big question – will Marisa be belting out Amy’s hits, or will they sprinkle some Amy magic over her vocals? Your guess is as good as ours.
But here’s the clincher – ‘Back to Black’ has the nod from Amy’s estate, so get ready for a musical treat. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride through the life and legacy of a true musical icon. Stay tuned for more updates.
