On the Ground at Rafah: Meeting Volunteers and Seeing the Crisis Firsthand

On Friday, 2nd January, Angelina Jolie visited the Rafah crossing in Egypt, where she met with volunteers from the Egyptian Red Crescent and drivers of humanitarian aid trucks waiting to bring essential supplies into Gaza. Along with a U.S. delegation, Jolie was welcomed by Egyptian leaders and had conversations with humanitarian workers on the front lines.

At the crossing, a Red Crescent volunteer told her that "there are thousands of aid trucks just waiting" to deliver critical items such as food, medicine and shelter supplies to the nearly 2.2 million people in Gaza who have been left in dire conditions by prolonged conflict. Jolie expressed how "honoured" she was to meet the volunteers and emphasized how critical it is to guarantee ongoing, secure, and, scaled-up delivery of humanitarian aid across the border.

The Rafah crossing has been a focal point in the Gaza crisis. Despite being a part of a ceasefire deal signed in late 2025, it has remained mostly blocked on the Gaza side, restricting the flow of necessary supplies and causing aid to accumulate on the Egyptian side. Jolie also went to El Arish Hospital in North Sinai, where several injured Palestinians have been sent for treatment, highlighting the human cost of war as well as the difficulty of delivering quality care in the face of limited resources.

Behind the scenes, Egypt and several allied countries urged the international community to pressure all parties to allow greater access for humanitarian convoys, a plea that Jolie echoed through her presence and conversations with officials and aid workers.

Beyond the Visit: Hope, Advocacy and What Comes Next

More than just a symbolic gesture, Angelina Jolie's visit to the Rafah crossing brought attention to a growing humanitarian problem that needs immediate response. She reportedly examined logistics warehouses and relief delivery systems in addition to chatting with officials and volunteers to have a thorough grasp of operational obstacles.

According to some sources, Jolie also revealed plans to build a relief village for Gaza's orphaned children. This project would give individuals who have lost family members in the conflict, access to homes, medical treatment, education, and psychological assistance. Her message was clear: the people of Gaza, especially its children, deserve not just survival but hope and opportunity.

By using her voice and presence on the ground, Jolie hopes to amplify the calls for sustained international support and inspire others with influence to act.
