Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Miscarriage During 2015 Off-Broadway Play

Famous for her iconic performances in plays and films, actress Anne Hathaway recently revealed on Instagram a personal journey leading up to her 2019 announcement that she was expecting her second child. Hathaway thought back on the episode while getting ready for her 2024 role in ‘The Idea of You’.

After that, Hathaway courageously shared a terrible story from 2015: she miscarried while performing in the six-week solo off-Broadway play ‘Grounded.’ Even her closest friends only found out about the miscarriage when they paid her a visit backstage, despite her devastation. Hathaway said, “The first time it didn’t work out for me,” in reflection on the experience. 

“Every night I had to give birth onstage while performing in a play. When I was performing on stage and acting like everything was OK, it was too much to hold inside.” She expressed sympathy for those going through similar struggles and stressed the value of family support during such difficult times.

Mother of two boys with husband Adam Shulman, Hathaway stresses the value of keeping a healthy balance between her personal and professional lives for her well-being.

She says, “There are needs in my family, and one need that children have is the need to be able to define their own lives… I never even think to connect the two, other than to express gratitude for how well they complement one another. However, they support one another via me rather than through a location outside of myself.”
