Anya Taylor-Joy Seeks Vengeance in New ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Trailer

Fans of ‘Mad Max’ rejoice: Furiosa is back!

A second trailer for ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ was released by Warner Bros. Pictures. It provides a closer look at Anya Taylor-Joy taking on the iconic role that Charlize Theron played in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015).

According to an official synopsis, the film, which stars Chris Hemsworth and is directed by George Miller, promises “an all-new original, standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of” Furiosa (played by Taylor-Joy, 27).

“As the world crumbled, young Furiosa is abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the clutches of the formidable Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (portrayed by Hemsworth, 40),” it continues. “Navigating through the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel ruled by The Immortan Joe.”

“While the two rulers clash for supremacy, Furiosa must endure numerous trials as she devises a plan to find her way back home,” the synopsis ends.

Theron was originally supposed to play a younger version of the post-apocalyptic heroine in Miller’s (79) original vision. But then his plans changed when he thought about the anti-ageing visual effects in Martin Scorsese’s 2019 film ‘The Irishman’.

Miller stated in a May 2020 interview with The New York Times, “For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet.”

“Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley,” he said. “Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

In the end, Taylor-Joy—best recognized for her part in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’—was selected to play Furiosa. In a Happy Sad Confused podcast episode from October 2020, she reflected on her casting and conveyed her gratitude and resolve.

Taylor-Joy said, “It’s hard to put into words; I feel so humbled and grateful.” “When I learned that I would be doing it, my first thought was, ‘I can’t wait to work so hard.'” I’m going to put a lot of effort into this.”

In July 2020, Theron talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how disappointed she was not to be playing Furiosa again, but she doesn’t hold it against them.

Taylor-Joy did, in fact, disclose in November 2022 that she and Theron intended to have dinner together and share stories from the set.

“Charlize was sweet enough — I think both of us ended up in a situation where we were both so respectful of each other that we didn’t want to reach out prior [to filming],” Taylor-Joy said. “The second it was over, once this press tour is over, we’re having dinner and we’re going to swap war stories for sure.”
