‘Baby Reindeer’ Maker Claims He “Feels Sorry” For The Stalker

The mastermind behind the popular Netflix series ‘Baby Reindeer’ has opened up about his perspective on the stalker character within the show.

Comedian Richard Gadd, who created the series, drew inspiration from his 2019 one-man play with the same title. ‘Baby Reindeer’ delves into the chilling real-life experience of Gadd’s encounter with stalking. The storyline revolves around struggling comedian Donny Dunn, portrayed by Gadd himself and his intricate relationship with Martha, played by Jessica Gunning.

Martha’s initially amiable demeanour takes a dark turn as her relentless stalking of Donny unfolds.

Their initial encounter is seemingly innocuous: Donny, while tending bar, extends kindness towards Martha, a visibly vulnerable customer. However, this simple act of goodwill spirals into an all-consuming obsession, posing a threat to their lives and compelling Donny to confront his buried traumas.

In a recent interview with Variety, Gadd discussed his intention to portray Martha as a somewhat sympathetic character, drawing from his encounters. “Stalking is often portrayed as the work of a villainous figure, but I saw a vulnerable individual who was unable to break free from the reality she constructed in her mind,” he explained. “Despite her actions, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. It’s a manifestation of mental illness that I wanted to accurately depict.”

Gadd’s insight sheds light on the complexity of stalking behaviours and challenges the conventional portrayal of stalkers as purely malevolent figures. By humanising Martha’s character, ‘Baby Reindeer’ prompts viewers to consider the nuances of mental health and the impact of trauma on individuals’ behaviours.
