The beloved giant red dog is officially making a comeback. 'Clifford the Big Red Dog' is set to return with a brand-new animated reboot on PBS Kids, introducing the iconic character to a new generation of viewers while reigniting nostalgia among longtime fans. Originally created by Norman Bridwell in 1963, Clifford has remained one of children's entertainment's most enduring and recognizable figures for decades.
With updated animation, fresh adventures, and a stronger focus on social-emotional learning, the new series hopes to preserve the warmth and positivity that made Clifford a childhood favourite across generations.
A New Chapter For An Iconic Character
The upcoming series will once again follow Clifford and his owner Emily Elizabeth, but this reimagined version aims to place greater emphasis on social-emotional learning, friendship, and community-building. According to PBS Kids, the new adaptation is designed for preschool audiences aged three to five and will focus on helping children develop foundational social skills in an engaging and playful format. The franchise has sold more than 135 million books worldwide and has inspired multiple animated adaptations, including the beloved early 2000s PBS series and the 2019 reboot. This latest reboot marks another evolution for the character, with producers promising a more comedic and adventure-driven approach while still preserving the warmth and emotional connection that made Clifford a household name.
"Clifford has been a favorite with children and families for generations," said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President and General Manager of PBS Kids and Education, while announcing the project.
Focus on Friendship and Community
The new series will reportedly center on themes of inclusion, problem-solving, teamwork, and building relationships within communities. Each episode will aim to encourage young viewers to engage with others positively and understand the importance of empathy and cooperation. The reboot will consist of 26 episodes, each featuring two 11-minute stories.
An interactive game will also accompany the show to further support learning and social development among preschool audiences. Production duties are being handled by 9 stories media group and Brown Bag Films, the same teams behind several successful children's programs, including Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Blue's Clues & You. The announcement has already sparked major nostalgia online, especially among millennials and Gen Z audiences who grew up watching Clifford on PBS Kids.

Social media discussions and Reddit threads were filled with fans reminiscing about the original series, particularly the performance of late actor John Ritter, who voiced Clifford in the 2000 adaptation. At the same time, reactions online have been mixed regarding yet another reboot. Some fans expressed excitement about introducing the character to younger audiences, while others questioned why the 2019 version was not simply continued instead.
Still, many viewers agreed that Clifford's core themes of kindness, friendship, and positivity remain timeless especially in today's increasingly fast-paced digital world.
Keeping Clifford's Legacy Alive
For PBS Kids, the reboot represents more than just reviving a familiar character. The network continues to invest heavily in educational programming that combines entertainment with emotional and social development. With a fresh animation style, updated storytelling, and a renewed focus on community values, the upcoming series hopes to ensure that Clifford's oversized adventures continue resonating with children and families for years to come.
