Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals His Status on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Has Changed

It appears that Benedict Cumberbatch is rethinking his earlier claim that he would not be featured in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Though it’s uncertain if he’s sincere, he suddenly seems to be taking back his statement to Variety that he wouldn’t be appearing in the next Marvel movie.
Business Insider questioned him if Marvel had contacted him following his initial remarks while he was at the Sundance Film Festival promoting his new movie, ‘The Thing With Feathers’. He acknowledged that he had been wrong and acknowledged that he was involved with the movie, but his response was a little unclear.
However, Cumberbatch added a cryptic comment, implying that nothing he says should be taken at face value, in response to the reminder that Marvel actors sometimes deceive fans about their roles—for example, Andrew Garfield denying his comeback in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

He questioned whether his earlier assertion that Doctor Strange will be on a “hiatus” during ‘Doomsday’ was a spoiler when he told Variety earlier this month. He added that after Jonathan Majors was kicked out of the franchise, the movie’s plans changed. Majors was fired in 2024 after being found guilty of assault, despite initially being positioned as the next big antagonist. As far as Cumberbatch was aware, his character didn’t fit into that aspect of the plot, which is why he wasn’t in ‘Doomsday’. He did, however, affirm that Doctor Strange would play a big part in ‘Secret Wars’ and that Marvel is still amenable to talking about the character’s future.
More information is anticipated in the upcoming months. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to open in theatres in the United States on 1st May 2026.
