Billie Eilish Debuts Stripped-Down Performances of ‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’

The Grammy-winning artist Billie Eilish recently unveiled a series of intimate performances featuring stripped-down renditions of tracks from her third studio album. This special presentation is part of Amazon Music’s new songwriting and performance series, ‘Songline’. In these performances, Eilish is accompanied by her brother Finneas and a team of talented musicians, who contribute vocals, strings, and percussion to create a deeply personal musical experience.

The performance highlights four standout tracks from Eilish’s latest album: ‘Skinny’, ‘L’Amour de Ma Vie’, ‘Wildflower’, and ‘Birds of a Feather’. Each of these songs is given a new, simplified arrangement, allowing their core emotional and lyrical elements to shine through. Eilish’s rendition of ‘Wildflower’, featuring Finneas on acoustic guitar and supported by the rest of the backing musicians, is available for fans to enjoy separately on her official YouTube channel.

Amazon Music’s ‘Songline’ series offers more than just a fresh take on these four songs. The episode featuring Eilish provides an in-depth look at the creative process behind the tracks. Eilish and Finneas discuss the development of each song, revealing insights into their songwriting journey. They specifically address ‘Skinny’ as the “entry point” into the album and share how parts of ‘Wildflower’ were written by a pool with Eilish’s dog present.

In the episode, Eilish explains her intention behind the stripped-down performances. She wanted to create less busy versions of the songs to “further explain the songs” and showcase the harmonies and emotional nuances that might be overshadowed in the original arrangements. She emphasises, “There’s so many harmonies and different parts and that is really what I wanted to showcase. The fun, sweet, emotional piece. Some of it gets drowned out a little bit and I just wanted to highlight the songs, because I love them and think they’re so special.”

The ensemble for this special performance includes bassist Solo Smith, drummer Andrew Marshall, and string instrumentalists Molly Rogers, Michelle Shin, and Leah Metzler. Vocalists Eloise Lamb, Jane Horner, and Rozzi also lend their voices to enhance the live renditions.

Eilish and Finneas have previously discussed the creation of their album on ‘Hot Ones Versus’. They shared details about their “biggest argument” during the album’s production, with Finneas reflecting on their dynamic. He mentioned, “I put my feet up on the desk a lot and Billie is right there.” He acknowledged that their “longest, biggest argument” occurred during a transitional period in their lives. Finneas admitted to learning a lot from being “too ego-centric,” recognizing the value of balancing honesty and authenticity in their collaborative process.
