Billie Eilish’s Former Choir on First Encounter With The Star: ‘Her Creativity Stood Out’

The heartwarming shoutout Billie Eilish gave to her former Los Angeles Children’s Chorus teacher, Janet Brigham, during her 2024 Oscars acceptance speech has sparked a wave of nostalgia. Brigham, who recently retired after over two decades with the choir, shared her memories of a bright-eyed young Billie on her first day.

“I vividly remember Billie’s first rehearsal,” Brigham says. “She sat up straight, taking everything in even though everyone was a bit shy. But her focus was clear.” Throughout her 22-year tenure, Brigham oversaw both young and intermediate singers, including Billie’s older brother Finneas.

She fondly recalls helping Finneas prepare for a college opera, which led to meeting their musical parents, Maggie and Patrick.

Having established a connection with the O’Connell family, Brigham recognized Billie’s talent from the start. “Her love for singing was evident,” she remarks. “Her natural pitch made her a joy to have in the choir; others naturally followed her lead.”

Beyond vocal expertise, Brigham witnessed Billie’s blossoming songwriting skills. “Even at a young age, her creativity shone through. She was always uniquely herself,” Brigham remembers. “I’d often see her jotting down lyrics and ideas in a notebook.”

While receiving an Oscars shoutout might not be the typical teacher’s reward, Brigham describes the moment as “incredible.” It serves as a testament to the impact educators can have on their students, fostering not just talent, but also the confidence to pursue their dreams.
