‘Blade Runner 2099’: Hunter Schafer and Michelle Yeoh to Star in The Series

Amazon’s upcoming series, ‘Blade Runner 2099,’ has added Hunter Schafer to its star-studded cast. Known for her roles in ‘Euphoria’ and ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,’ Schafer will be joining Michelle Yeoh, famous for her performance in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once.’ This series serves as a sequel to both the original ‘Blade Runner’ and its follow-up, ‘Blade Runner 2049.’

Although specific details about the plot and Schafer’s character remain under wraps, it has been revealed that Michelle Yeoh will portray Olwen, a replicant nearing the end of her lifespan. Schafer’s role is rumoured to be that of Cora, who allies with Yeoh’s character, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Hunter Schafer first captivated audiences as Jules in HBO’s ‘Euphoria,’ starring alongside Zendaya’s character, Rue. Her performance quickly made her a favourite among younger viewers. Schafer further showcased her versatility by playing Tigris Snow in Lionsgate’s ‘The Hunger Games’ prequel, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.’

While fans eagerly await the next season of ‘Euphoria,’ Schafer has several exciting projects on the horizon. She will appear in ‘Mother Mary,’ an A24 production featuring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, and in ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. Additionally, she is set to star in NEON’s horror thriller ‘Cuckoo.’

The ‘Blade Runner 2099’ series, developed by Ridley Scott—the director of the original 1982 science fiction classic—was announced in November 2021, with Amazon later confirming its involvement. Set 50 years after the events of ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ this new chapter promises to expand the universe even further.

Silka Luisa will serve as the showrunner and executive producer, while Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-founders of Alcon Entertainment, will also produce. Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise in 2011, enabling the creation of new prequels and sequels. Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce two episodes, alongside Steven Johnson.
