‘Borderlands’ Movie Receives Harsh Early Reviews
The highly anticipated ‘Borderlands’ film is finally hitting cinemas this weekend (9th August), but early reactions are not painting a pretty picture. The adaptation of the popular video game series, which has been in development for nearly a decade, is being described by audiences as “baffling,” “a huge misfire,” and “borderline unwatchable.”
The film follows the story of Lilith, an outlaw returning to her roots to team up with a ragtag group of misfits. Their mission? To find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. Along the way, they must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits, with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance.

Despite the star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and performances by Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, the film seems to be struggling to impress. Directed by Eli Roth and based on a script by ‘Chernobyl’ creator Craig Mazin, the project has faced several hurdles, including last year’s reshoots led by ‘Deadpool’ director Tim Miller.
The first reviews are not kind. One viewer wrote on X, “‘Borderlands’ is borderline unwatchable. The violence is bland & uninspired, the chemistry is non-existent & the trajectory of the story is both boring & painfully obvious. I had no expectations for this & yet I was somehow still let down.”
Another early reaction expressed similar disappointment: “Oh hey I can tell you I’ve seen #BorderlandsMovie now and that it’s really bad. I really wanted to like it, but an uninspired plot + several phoned-in performances + being stuck in a weird place where it looks both expensive and cheap at the same time make it a huge misfire.”
There are some glimmers of hope, as not all feedback has been entirely negative. However, for a film that has been years in the making, the initial response is far from the blockbuster success the creators likely envisioned.
