BTS’ Suga Apologizes Receives Fine For Riding Scooter Under The Influence of Alcohol

BTS member Suga has publicly apologized following an incident where he was fined and had his license suspended for riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. The apology came after he acknowledged the breach of traffic laws in South Korea.

In a detailed post on X, Suga explained that he had consumed alcohol during dinner and subsequently used an electric scooter to return home. He admitted that he was unaware of the legal restrictions against using an electric scooter under the influence. “Because I had been drinking, I did not realize that using an electric scooter after drinking was against the law, and violated the road traffic laws,” Suga stated. He expressed feeling “heavy-hearted” and “sorry” for his actions.

The incident occurred when Suga fell from the scooter while attempting to park it in front of his home. A nearby police officer conducted a breathalyzer test, which revealed that Suga’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit of 0.08 per cent. This led to the suspension of his license and the imposition of a fine.

Suga reassured that there were no other individuals or properties affected by the fall. “There were no other persons or establishments damaged during that time, but it is my responsibility to bow my head and apologize (to you) with no excuses,” he wrote. He concluded his message with a commitment to avoid such behaviour in the future, saying, “I’d like to apologize for my negligence and wrong behaviour to all those whose actions have hurt, and will be careful with my actions to make sure that things like this do not happen again.”

Following the incident, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that Suga was found lying on the ground in the Yongsan district of Seoul. He was booked at the Yongsan Police Station on charges related to violating the Road Traffic Act and was questioned before being released.

BigHit Entertainment, the record label for BTS, also issued a statement addressing the incident. They apologized for the “disappointment caused by the artist’s inappropriate behaviour” and noted that, as Suga was a social service agent during his military service, he is prepared to face any disciplinary actions resulting from this incident.
