Cardi B Addresses Calling Met Gala Dress Designer as ‘Asian’

Cardi B has addressed the recent controversy surrounding her comments about Sensen Lii, the designer of her stunning black dress worn at the 2024 Met Gala.

During an interview with Vogue at the event, the Grammy-winning rapper, aged 31, referred to Lii as “Asian and everything” instead of using his name. In an Instagram post shared by TMZ, Cardi explained that she was nervous on the red carpet and forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name, which she found a bit complicated. Feeling rushed and overwhelmed, she resorted to describing him as an “Asian designer” to acknowledge his heritage, though she wasn’t certain of his specific nationality.

The backlash Cardi received included criticism from Gilbert Cheah, Vogue’s former managing director, who commented on an Instagram Reel of her at the event, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the designer’s name and not just his ethnicity.

In response, Cardi addressed the criticism in her post, emphasizing that such remarks not only targeted her but also offended the talented individuals behind the scenes.

Lii’s own Instagram account also featured the video, accompanied by a caption explaining the inspiration behind the dress, which symbolized fertility and growth using rich black soil imagery.
