After dominating pop culture with the neon-green chaos of 'Brat,' Charli XCX is officially entering a brand-new era. 'Rock Music,' the British pop star's most recent single, is a loud, rebellious, guitar-driven track that marks a significant change in both sound and style. Released alongside a striking black-and-white music video, the song has already ignited big conversations online, with fans questioning whether Charli is actually embracing rock music or merely reinventing pop once again in her own unpredictable style.

Charli XCX Says Goodbye to the "Brat" Era

Charli XCX's critically acclaimed album 'Brat' has profoundly changed contemporary pop culture over the past two years. When the record was released in 2024, it developed into an online movement more than just a music project. The "Brat Summer" era dominated social media and festival culture globally, from internet slang and club anthems to viral memes and fashion fads.

Songs from the album, which combined hyperpop, electronic chaos, and emotionally honest songwriting into a unique sound, helped Charli establish herself as one of the most significant pop musicians of her generation.

Now, however, Charli appears ready to move on. In recent interviews and studio teasers, she hinted that the dancefloor-focused 'Brat' chapter had reached its end. One of her most talked-about statements came during a British Vogue interview, where she declared, "I think the dance floor is dead, so now we're making rock music." Her next album was said to completely forgo pop in favour of a rock-inspired sound after that line went viral right away.

However, Charli then emphasized on the internet that her use of rock music does not imply that she is producing a conventional rock album. Instead, the new song seems to represent experimentation—a playful collision between distorted guitars, glitchy pop production, and her signature chaotic energy. Longtime partners A. G. Cook and Finn Keane, the same creative team behind 'Brat,' co-produced the single. The song has the erratic hyperpop DNA that characterizes Charli's music despite its rawer vocals and gritty guitar riffs.

Inside 'Rock Music' And Its Wild New Visuals

Aidan Zamiri, who previously collaborated with Charli on her remix with Billie Eilish, created the visually gritty music video for 'Rock Music,' which was released on 8th May. Charli tosses a speaker out of a window at the beginning of the black-and-white video, which then opens into a wild sequence of punk-inspired, rebellious images with cigarette smoke, flashing lights, warped camera angles, and the atmosphere of an underground party.

The video immediately fueled discussions online because it feels intentionally messy, ironic, and self-aware—something Charli has mastered throughout her career. Additionally, many observed that the song itself is remarkably brief—less than two minutes—almost like an unexpected burst of energy rather than a typical pop hit.

While some listeners perceived it as the start of a true sound rebirth, others characterized it as a satire of rock music society. Reddit discussions surrounding the release have been equally divided, with many fans praising Charli's fearless experimentation while others debated whether the track was intentionally chaotic.

What makes the release even more interesting is that Charli herself seems aware of the confusion surrounding the song. In earlier studio footage shared online, she jokingly referred to 'Rock Music' as "not actually rock music," reinforcing the idea that the title may be more conceptual than literal.

What's Next For Charli XCX?

While 'Rock Music' marks the beginning of a brand-new era, Charli XCX is also preparing for a massive festival season in 2026. One of her biggest upcoming appearances will be at Lollapalooza, where she has officially been announced as one of the headline performers alongside artists like Lorde, JENNIE, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Fans anticipate that Charli's performance will be one of the most talked-about of the summer during the festival, which will take place at Grant Park in Chicago from 30th July to 2nd August.

The latest track is also reportedly going to be the lead single off her next studio album, which is anticipated to be released later this year. The project is rumoured to feature a more analogue-inspired sound with fewer heavy vocal effects and a stronger focus on live instrumentation. Prior to this release, Charli collaborated with artists including Sky Ferreira and John Cale on a companion soundtrack record for the 2025 released 'Wuthering Heights' remake, starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie in lead roles.

Beyond music, she has increasingly stepped into the film world as well, with multiple acting projects currently in development.
