Christopher Nolan Won’t be Directing The Next James Bond Film

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan has quashed the buzz around him taking on the iconic role of 007, James Bond. After the triumph of his World War II drama ‘Oppenheimer,’ which has become the highest-grossing film in the genre and the top-performing biopic, grossing a whopping $950 million globally since July, Nolan set the record straight in a recent interview.

Dismissing the speculation about his involvement in the ‘Bond’ franchise, Nolan said, “No, sadly no — no truth to those rumours.” The director, who has often expressed his admiration for ‘Bond’ films, particularly on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast in July, where he acknowledged the influence of ‘Bond’ movies on his work, emphasized the importance of the right creative moment.

Nolan, known for his films with a Bond-esque vibe like ‘Tenet’ and ‘Inception,’ stated, “It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong.”

While Nolan has kept a line of communication open with ‘Bond’ producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson and expressed his deep love for the character, he remains tight-lipped about his next project after ‘Oppenheimer.’ Meanwhile, the ‘Bond’ producers are in search of a new star to fill Daniel Craig’s shoes, who concluded his role in 2021’s ‘No Time to Die.’

Producer Greg Wilson confirmed that there’s no active development on the next ‘Bond’ film at the moment. He stated, “There will be another ‘Bond’ someday, but we’re not actively developing it.” Broccoli, addressing the reinvention needed for the next Bond chapter after the character’s demise in ‘No Time To Die,’ remarked, “It’s gonna take a while for us to get – you know, it’s a whole new reinvention. So it’ll take some time.”

As rumours swirl around about the next James Bond, a poll by William Hill Vegas over the summer revealed that the UK’s top choice for the role is Idris Elba, closely followed by Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill. Broccoli added, “There’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter, and we haven’t even begun with that.”

In the midst of this, the Amazon Prime Video series ‘007: Road to a Million has been launched, featuring contestants taking on Bond-inspired challenges globally for a chance to win a £1 million cash prize.
