Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic film 'The Odyssey' is already generating massive buzz, with IMAX 70mm screenings selling out across the globe — a full year before the film even hits cinemas.

In an unprecedented move, 26 IMAX venues worldwide opened presales for the film this week, exactly one year ahead of its scheduled release on 16th July, 2026. The early demand has been staggering. Within just an hour, all U.S. IMAX 70mm tickets were gone, and both UK locations — London’s Science Museum and BFI IMAX — followed suit, selling out rapidly. Some resellers were quick to list tickets for between $300 and $400, indicating intense anticipation from fans.

Still in production, 'The Odyssey' is Nolan’s cinematic take on Homer’s legendary Greek epic. The film boasts a stellar cast featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, along notable names. It marks the first movie ever to be shot entirely using IMAX large-format cameras — a testament to Nolan’s dedication to the cinematic experience.

 'The Odyssey' Predictions

Following the success of 'Oppenheimer', which grossed over $975 million globally and earned Nolan his first Academy Award for Best Director, alongside six other Oscars, expectations for 'The Odyssey' are sky-high. Industry analysts already predict it could be the director’s most ambitious and successful project to date.

True to form, Nolan is continuing to champion the traditional theatrical release model. Earlier this month, a teaser for  'The Odyssey'  was shown exclusively in cinemas rather than being released online. The trailer gave fans a glimpse of Tom Holland’s character, Telemachus, as he searches for his father, setting the tone for what promises to be an emotionally rich and visually breathtaking journey.

Stunt coordinator James Newman, who’s working on the film, has described the project as an unparalleled production, calling it a cinematic experience unlikely to be replicated in today’s film landscape. He emphasised the scale and ambition, suggesting that Nolan is pushing creative boundaries further than ever before.

With a sold-out IMAX run a full year ahead of release, 'The Odyssey' is already shaping up to be a landmark event in modern cinema — a true epic for the big screen.
