Courteney Cox Pushes for David Arquette’s Return in ‘Scream’ 7 Despite Dewey’s Death
Courteney Cox is eager to see more of Dewey Riley in ‘Scream 7’. In a recent interview with Variety, the actress expressed her hope that ex-husband David Arquette’s character could return, despite his death in 2022’s ‘Scream’.
“I get why they did it, but wow, what a missed character,” Cox, 60, said during the Rock4EB charity event in Malibu on Sept. 21. “Dewey is so beloved by *Scream* fans. They need to figure something out.”
Cox and Arquette, who were married from 1999 to 2013, share a 20-year-old daughter, Coco. Following the success of 2023’s ‘Scream VI’, which achieved the franchise’s best opening weekend box office, a seventh film was announced in August.

However, Arquette seemed doubtful about Dewey’s return when asked by a fan during an episode of ‘Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen’ in July. The actor, 53, laughed and said, “I don’t think so — I mean, I don’t know! There’s always a chance, but I haven’t gotten any calls.”
He also confirmed that returning star Neve Campbell hadn’t shared any insider details about the next movie. Campbell, 50, will once again portray her iconic role as Sidney Prescott.
As for Cox, she revealed that she hasn’t “officially” signed on for ‘Scream 7’ but hinted that she’s aware of developments in the script, noting that “they’re always rewriting.” She’s excited to see creator Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 ‘Scream’, take on the director’s role for the upcoming film. “You can’t get better than that choice,” Cox said, adding, “It’s going to be fun.”
