Dakota Johnson Says She Has Doubts About Marriage With Chris Martin

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s relationship has faced some uncertainty, particularly around the idea of marriage. According to a source close to the couple, the actress does not see legal commitment as a necessity, believing that a piece of paper doesn’t fundamentally alter a relationship. This sentiment has roots in her personal history, as her parents, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, have each experienced multiple divorces. Consequently, Dakota isn’t enthusiastic about the legal aspects of marriage.

Rumours of an engagement first surfaced in 2020 when Dakota was seen wearing an emerald ring. Despite this, marriage does not seem to be a priority for her. “Dakota loves Chris but is unsure about marriage,” the source revealed, emphasizing that she is not a runaway bride but simply uncertain if marriage aligns with her beliefs.

The couple, despite their strong bond, have faced some rocky times. Their last public appearance together was in February during a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Since then, they have missed several significant events in each other’s lives, fueling speculation about their relationship status. For instance, Dakota was absent from the graduation ceremony of Martin’s son with Gwyneth Paltrow, while Martin missed the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Dakota’s film ‘Daddio.’

These absences led to rumours of a breakup. However, a source confirmed to People on June 11 that despite experiencing ups and downs, Dakota and Chris are still together. “They’ve had their challenges, but they are definitely back on,” the source affirmed.

Engagement rumours have persisted since 2020, although neither Dakota nor Chris has publicly confirmed them. In March 2024, a source told People that the couple had been engaged for years but were in no rush to marry. Dakota has been seen wearing the emerald ring at various events, including her birthday celebration in October 2023 and a Hope for Depression Research Foundation event in November.

However, she did not wear the ring during her appearances on ‘SNL’ in January or at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.

Despite the ongoing speculation, there has been no official confirmation of their engagement. As it stands, Dakota, 34, and Chris, 47, are content living their lives without the formalities of marriage, enjoying their relationship without the “pomp and circumstance” of a wedding, according to the source.
