Director of Michael Jackson Biopic Praises Nephew’s Performance

In a momentous unveiling by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures, the first glimpse of Jaafar, in character for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, ‘Michael,’ was shared with the public. Director Fuqua conveyed his profound admiration for Jaafar’s portrayal, emphasising that it transcends mere physical resemblance to his late uncle.

Fuqua articulated, “We have assembled an incredible team of artists for this project — hair and makeup, costumes, cinematography, choreography, lighting, everything — and some who knew and worked with Michael are reuniting for this film.” He continued, emphasising Jaafar’s pivotal role, stating, “But most importantly, it’s Jaafar who embodies Michael.”

“It goes beyond the physical resemblance,” Fuqua elaborated. “It’s Michael’s spirit that comes through magically. You have to experience it to believe it.” The commencement of filming for the biopic was announced late last month. Notable actors Nia Long and Colman Domingo, portraying Jackson’s parents Katherine and Joe respectively, were recently spotted in costume on set.

The captivating first-look photo of Jaafar, captured by renowned photographer Kevin Mazur, evoked poignant memories, as Mazur had taken Michael’s final photos during rehearsals shortly before his untimely passing in 2009.

The development of Lionsgate’s ‘Michael’ was first disclosed, alongside the announcement of Fuqua’s directorial involvement. The screenplay, penned by acclaimed screenwriter John Logan, boasts an ensemble cast featuring Miles Teller.

Jaafar, the son of Michael’s elder brother Jermaine Jackson, shares familial ties deeply rooted in the musical legacy of the Jackson family, having performed alongside Michael in The Jackson 5 before the latter embarked on his illustrious solo career.
