Diving Into The Alternate Sequel Plans for ‘Finding Nemo’

Disney/Pixar is gearing up for a new film release, amid the ongoing debate about sequels and reboots. While Pixar is renowned for its captivating narratives and successful sequels, some alternate storylines have faced challenges, like the original plan for a ‘Finding Nemo’ sequel. Nonetheless, anticipation for this upcoming movie is palpable.

Before the release of ‘Finding Dory’ in 2016, Pixar had intentions to expand upon their original work, akin to ‘Toy Story 2’. ‘Finding Nemo’, which grossed $871 million worldwide and earned Pixar its first Oscar for Best Animated Feature, prompted Disney to establish Circle 7 Animation, a division dedicated to producing sequels to Pixar properties.

'Finding Nemo 2''s script was leaked online following the cancellation of its initial production. Penned by Laurie Craig, the storyline closely mirrors the original, following Dory, Nemo, and a new character named Remy as they search for Marlin, who has been captured. The sequel explores the dynamics between Nemo and his newfound brother Remy, shedding light on sibling rivalry and familial bonds.

The narrative also revisits beloved characters like Gill and introduces new adventures for Marlin, including encounters with a captured dolphin named Percy and a polar bear named Blanca. These experiences serve to enrich Marlin's journey as a parent and underscore themes of empathy and acceptance.

However, despite the intriguing premise of ‘Finding Nemo 2’, ‘Finding Dory’ ultimately emerged as the superior sequel. Centred on Dory's quest to reunite with her parents, the film resonated with audiences and surpassed expectations both commercially and critically.

Pixar is currently exploring new avenues for the ‘Finding Nemo’ and Incredibles franchises, with chief creative officer Pete Docter expressing optimism about the vast storytelling potential within these worlds. With plans to release three movies every two years, Pixar aims to strike a balance between sequels, spinoffs, and original concepts, leveraging the rich tapestry of characters and settings that have captivated audiences for years.
