Dua Lipa Claims Haters “Fuelled” Her After ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy in 2019

Dua Lipa recently took a moment to reflect on the backlash she faced after clinching the Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’ in 2019. Last night, Apple Music treated fans to a nearly hour-long conversation between Dua Lipa and Zane Lowe, where she spilled the beans about her upcoming third album, ‘Radical Optimism,’ set to hit the shelves on 3rd May.

During her chat with Lowe, Dua Lipa delved into the challenges she’s encountered in her career, especially the criticism she faced following her Grammy win. Speaking candidly to Lowe, she shared, “I think everything comes in stages and waves. There can be a moment where people really love you and you feel so supported and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is great.’ Especially in the beginning. I was doing interviews and people were like, ‘How do you deal with hate?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t get any hate. It’s great.’ And then that changed really quickly.”

In the final moments of her conversation with Zane Lowe, she revisited the aftermath of her ‘Best New Artist’ win, recalling, “There were people online being like, ‘She’s not deserving of it. She’s got no stage presence. She can’t do this. She’s not well-equipped too, she won’t be here next year. There was a lot of that. That fuelled me in a way.”

Dua Lipa then went on to divulge her strategy for handling criticism, saying, “I just go, ‘OK, all of this is background noise and I should just stick on my path.” The artist added, “Because every time someone has doubted me, I’ve proved them wrong. And for me, I’m like, this is fueling me. This is pushing me to be better and to work hard. And I get a real kick out of proving people wrong.”

Her latest single from the album, ‘Illusion,’ has just hit the airwaves. Before that, she released the album’s debut single, ‘Houdini,’ in early November last year, followed by ‘Training Season,’ which she premiered at the Grammys earlier this year.
