Ellen Pompeo Returns For 7 Episodes in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 21: What Fans Can Expect

Ellen Pompeo, renowned for her portrayal of Meredith Grey on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, will grace the screen in seven episodes of the show’s highly anticipated 21st season. The actress, known for her enduring role in the series, had a reduced presence in seasons 19 and 20.  Despite this, she continued to contribute significantly as an executive producer by providing the iconic opening and closing voiceovers for each episode.  

Fans vividly remember the dramatic twist at the end of season 20 when Meredith resigned from her position at the hospital following Catherine Fox’s (Debbie Allen) discovery of her clandestine Alzheimer’s research. This revelation also entangled Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) in the ensuing turmoil.

On a more personal note, Meredith’s romantic storyline took a hopeful turn when her boyfriend, Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), surprised her with heartfelt praise for her bravery. He expressed his desire to stand by her side as she embarked on her next adventure, adding a layer of emotional depth to her character’s journey.

A magazine confirmed the renewal of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for its 21st season, cementing its status as the longest-running primetime medical drama and the network’s longest-running primetime scripted series. The show’s official Instagram page celebrated the news with a playful post: “Push (twenty) one of epi! 😉 #GreysAnatomy will be coming back for another season on ABC!”

In a candid conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors series in June 2023, Pompeo discussed the future of Meredith Grey with former Grey’s co-star Katherine Heigl. She hinted at her plans for the upcoming season, expressing her willingness to make appearances if her schedule allows.

“I will be making some appearances hopefully next year if I can find some time,” Pompeo shared. “It’s not a complete goodbye. And I think we’ve got an interesting story to tell.” This revelation has left fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Meredith Grey’s story.
