Emma Stone is back with another daring transformation in her latest film 'Bugonia,' directed by longtime collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos. The Academy Award-winning actress, who is well-known for her bold roles in 'La La Land,' and 'Poor Things,' takes on a physically taxing and darkly humorous part that challenged her mental and emotional boundaries. However, Stone proudly disclosed in a lighthearted admission that she made it through the entire filming "without breaking any bones."

The sci-fi dark comedy, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, is set to hit U.S. theatres on 31st October, promising audiences a twisted, thought-provoking ride unlike anything they have seen before.

A Physically Demanding Role—and "No Bones Broken"

Emma Stone, an Emmy winner, expressed her pride in having "broken no bones" during the rigorous filming of 'Bugonia' in a recent interview. She recalled nervously waiting for a scene in which her co-star Jesse Plemons, playing beekeeper-turned-conspiracy theorist Teddy Gatz, would tackle her; she said "He was completely safe and did an incredible job. I broke no bones." Stone emphasized that despite her history of injuries, she managed to complete the project without experiencing any physical difficulties.

The remark carries extra weight given the extreme nature of the material: the film involves kidnapping, interrogation and a hair-shaving sequence for her character.

Transformation, Character & Film Details

Two conspiracy-minded cousins, Teddy (played by Plemons) and Don (played by newcomer Aidan Delbis), accuse Stone's character, Michelle Fuller, a vicious pharmaceutical CEO, of being an alien who is determined to destroy the planet. The film is an English-language adaptation of the 2003 South Korean cult sci-fi comedy-thriller 'Save the Green Planet!'. She also revealed that the experience brought up emotional memories of her mother's treatment for breast cancer.

According to director Yorgos Lanthimos, Don, played by Delbis, is "the soul of the film," and the narrative already addresses current concerns of identity, power, technology, and the environment.

Release & Broader Context

Stone described 'Bugonia' as "funny and fucked-up," yet alive and evocative of our current moment, when it had its debut at the Venice Film Festival in August 2025. It will arrive in select U.S. theatres on 24th October, and expand widely from 31st October. The actors and crew have discussed how the film's conspiracy theory and kidnapping plot appeal to people's natural apprehension about authority, wellness, and the unknown. Echoing the main idea of the movie, Stone also joked during a press conference when asked if she believed in extraterrestrials, "How do you know I'm not an alien?".

All things considered, Emma Stone's most recent role may appear strange on paper—a strong CEO kidnapped for being extraterrestrial—but she obviously handled it with genuine seriousness (and without experiencing any serious injuries to prove it). 'Bugonia' promises to provide Stone with yet another powerful, transformative turn while challenging audiences.
