In a recent interview, Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone—known for her iconic roles in films like 'La La Land,' 'The Favourite,' and the dark comedy 'Bugonia'—disclosed that she deliberately avoids using Instagram because she is worried about her mental health. She describes herself as "such a lurker" when it comes to social media.
While promoting her recently shot Super Bowl commercial for Squarespace, Stone spoke with Rolling Stone about why she prefers to avoid social media, how she interacts with content in other ways, and how her attitude toward fame and technology fits into her life as a mother and artist.
Why Emma Stone Avoids Instagram and Her Take on Digital Life
Emma Stone, 37, has made a deliberate choice not to maintain an Instagram account, and she's open about the reason: mental health. She claimed in the Rolling Stone interview that she is "too afraid of her own mental health" to participate actively on the platform, saying instead that she would rather lurk in silence and follow other people's posts without taking part. She noted that by making this choice, she is able to avoid the stress and anxiety that might accompany using social media, which she believes could be detrimental to her wellbeing.

Rather than using Instagram, Stone said she stays connected online through Substack newsletters, where she reads fashion content, creative writing, and even a bit of "gossipy stuff." She first became interested in digital expression as a child, enjoying creating basic websites using tools like Angelfire and GeoCities. She even talked about how she had to learn how to buy her own domain name, a topic that is incorporated into a new Super Bowl commercial she made for Squarespace with Bugonia director Yorgos Lanthimos. The commercial will debut on 8th February, 2026.
Star Power, 'Bugonia' and Life Beyond Social Media
Emma Stone has continued to advance professionally despite her decision to avoid Instagram. As award season approaches, she's actually having one of the most celebrated times of her career. Stone is once again in the spotlight as a producer as well as an actor after receiving a Best Actress nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards for her role in Lanthimos' dark comedy 'Bugonia,' which has also received a Best Picture nomination. This marks her fourth feature with Lanthimos, following 'The Favourite,' 'Poor Things' and 'Kinds of Kindness.'

Bugonia's daring storytelling and genre-bending plot have won accolades from both critics and fans, and Stone's portrayal of a strong CEO in an odd dilemma has created a lot of excitement. Her dedication to her work and her careful handling of fame and technology demonstrate how she strikes a balance between her personal principles and her public persona.
Although avoiding Instagram might seem out of the ordinary in today's celebrity culture, Stone feels that it supports her creativity and mental well-being and frees her up to concentrate on her career, her family, and the things that are most important to her.
