Ethan Slater recently looked back on one of the most discouraging moments from the early days of his career.
The 33-year-old actor shared the story during a recent event at Vassar College, where he was honoured with the Young Alum Achievement Award. While speaking with professors Chris Grabowski and Shona Tucker, Slater recalled an audition that left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
Ethan Slater Shares About His Worst Audition
After finishing his audition and stepping out of the room, Ethan Slater overheard the director questioning why he had even been brought in. At the time, the comment hit hard. Slater later learned that he had been far too young for the role, nearly two decades younger than what the part required.

Back then, the experience felt crushing. At just 23 years old, he walked away convinced his career might already be over. Looking back now, Slater says gaining experience on the casting side of the industry has helped him reframe that moment. He now sees the comment as unprofessional and more reflective of the situation than of his talent, adding that it likely wasn't meant as personally as it felt.
Ethan Slater's Impressive Career
Although Ethan Slater didn't name the project involved, his career has continued to grow in impressive ways. He recently co-wrote the play 'Marcel on the Train' with Marshall Pailet, which is set to premiere Off-Broadway in February 2026 at New York City's Classic Stage Company. Slater will also star in the production as legendary mime Marcel Marceau.
His recent work includes co-writing the musical 'Edge of the World' and appearing in the film adaptations of 'Wicked' and its sequel, along with roles on television shows such as 'Elsbeth,' 'Gen V,' and 'The Marvellous Mrs Maisel.'
