Ewan Mitchell on Why He Hasn’t Watched ‘Game of Thrones’: “I Didn’t Want it to Inform My Decisions”

Ewan Mitchell, who brings the character Aemond Targaryen to life in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon,’ recently shared a surprising revelation: he’s never watched ‘Game of Thrones.’ In a chat with Comicbook, Mitchell admitted he avoided the iconic series, even when asked if he’d like his character to interact with anyone from the original show.

With season 2 of the spin-off just around the corner, the cast has been energetically promoting it, and there’s already buzz about seasons 3 and 4.

Mitchell explained his choice, saying, “I haven’t seen the original ‘Game of Thrones.’ I have a confession to make. I’ve never seen it and I didn’t want to watch it going into this role.” He wanted to ensure his portrayal of Aemond remained unique and untouched by previous performances. “I didn’t want it to inform my decisions in any way, shape, or form, you know, whether it be consciously or subconsciously. I wanted to bring something fresh. Aemond is one of a kind, you know.”

In another conversation with Vogue, Mitchell teased what fans can expect from his character in the upcoming season. He hinted that his villainous role would bring a darker, almost horror-like twist to the show.

Meanwhile, George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind ‘House of the Dragon,’ revealed in December that the writing team is already hard at work on the third and fourth seasons. Martin shared on his blog, “I spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon.”

He added, “They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… though two days were not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.”
