Exploring Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Awkwardness at King Charles’ Coronation

Kate Middleton and Prince William faced delays arriving at King Charles’ coronation on 6th May 2023, causing logistical challenges before the historic event unfolded.

According to royal biographer Robert Hardman in his book, ‘The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy,’ King Charles and Queen Camilla unintentionally arrived early for their crowning ceremony at Westminster Abbey. This resulted in a timing mismatch as they reached the venue before other key figures like Prince George, leading to an unforeseen complication.

Hardman describes the scene in his book, recounting how the Prince and Princess of Wales and their younger children were running slightly behind schedule. They were supposed to arrive eight minutes ahead of the King and Queen but ended up arriving after them. This situation caused tension, as depicted in a lipreader’s interpretation of King Charles expressing frustration about the delay.

The root cause of the delay is subject to different interpretations. Some sources suggest that Prince William and Princess Kate’s decision to film the coronation added extra time to their schedule, while others speculate that the King’s early arrival caused traffic issues for the Wales’ car.

Despite meticulous rehearsals, the coronation ceremony seemed to proceed smoothly overall. Prince William’s significant role in the line of succession was underscored when he knelt before his father to pay homage after the coronation. Additionally, Prince George made history by participating as a Page of Honor, marking the first time a future monarch officially played a role in a coronation service.

Later, Prince William and Princess Kate, along with their three children, appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to support King Charles, highlighting their prominent position within the royal family.
