Fans React Negatively to ‘Borderlands’ Trailer, Calls It “GOTG At Home”

The trailer for the much-anticipated film adaptation of ‘Borderlands’ has finally dropped, but it seems that fans aren’t entirely sold on what they’ve seen.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Hart, the long-awaited movie from Lionsgate is set to hit cinemas on 9th August. Based on the popular first-person shooter game series of the same name, Blanchett takes the lead as Lilith, an outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora at the request of weapons manufacturer Atlas (Edgar Ramirez) to track down his missing daughter.

Lilith assembles a crew of five other misfits to explore the planet, including Hart, Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munteanu, with Jack Black lending his voice to the robot Claptrap.

The film was first announced back in 2015, and after filming commenced in 2021 under the direction of Eli Roth and a screenplay by Craig Mazin, anticipation has been building. However, despite the excitement, the initial reactions to the trailer have been somewhat mixed, tending towards the negative.

Critics have pointed out that the trailer gives off vibes reminiscent of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’, leading to comparisons that haven’t entirely sat well with the fanbase. “We have Guardians Of The Galaxy at home,” remarked one user on X/Twitter, echoing a sentiment shared by others.

Another fan expressed their disappointment, saying, “I absolutely love the ‘Borderlands’ franchise, but this is going to be some steaming mid.”

There were also concerns about the casting choices, with some fans questioning why Claptrap’s original voice actor wasn’t retained for the role. “Why didn’t they sign Claptrap’s voice actor who is far more memorable than Jack Black for the role?” one user pondered, highlighting a common sentiment among the community.

Despite the mixed reception to the trailer, it has been clarified that “The Borderlands Cinematic Universe is not identical to the Borderlands Videogame Universe,” indicating that while the film stays true to the characters, tone, and style of the game, it will feature independent storylines.
