Fridayy Reflects on Recording Hook For Will Smith's New Song 4 Years Ago: “It's a Blessing”

Will Smith’s latest release, ‘You Can Make It’, arrived unexpectedly for fans, but its inception dates back several years, as revealed by Fridayy, who discussed the collaboration at the 2024 BET Awards. The BET Awards nominee shared insights into how the uplifting track came to fruition.

“I recorded that hook four years ago in my mom's house in 2020,” Fridayy disclosed, reflecting on the origins of his contribution to the song. The ‘God Did’ singer-songwriter also acknowledged producer Ayo, half of the Grammy-winning duo Ayo N Keyz, who facilitated the connection with Smith earlier this year. “He played Will the hook, and Will added his verses on there,” Fridayy explained. “So it's a blessing, bro.”

Fridayy emphasised the enduring impact of his music, including his collaboration with Smith, highlighting its hopeful and motivational qualities that resonate across time. “The type of music I make, like you said, it's hopeful, it’s motivational and it's timeless,” he remarked. “I can make a hook five years ago, and it means something to people today.”

Smith is set to perform ‘You Can Make It’  live for the first time at the BET Awards, underscoring the significance of this major release. The actor recently shared his heartfelt sentiments about the song’s meaning and his personal journey with music. In a social media post on Friday, June 28, Smith expressed, “Through some of my darkest moments, music has always been there for me — to lift me and help me grow.”

Continuing his message, he conveyed his hope that the song would similarly uplift and bring joy to listeners. Smith’s return to music follows a period of creative exploration, as he revealed to Extra earlier in the month his dedicated efforts over the past year and a half.

“I have a project that is, without question, the most personal and powerful music that I’ve ever made,” he shared. “So, you know, I'm going to sneak that out on you in a month or so.”As anticipation builds for Smith’s performance and the impact of ‘You Can Make It’, fans eagerly await the culmination of his musical journey and its resonance on stage at the BET Awards.
