Glen Powell Jokes ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Was a ‘$200 Million Ray-Ban Ad’ But Doesn’t Get Free Sunglasses
In a playful and humorous revelation, actor Glen Powell jokingly confirmed that the highly acclaimed film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was, in fact, a cleverly disguised $200 million advertisement for the iconic Ray-Ban sunglasses brand. Powell, known for his captivating performances on the silver screen, made this tongue-in-cheek remark during a recent interview with InStyle magazine, alluding to the ubiquitous presence of branded aviators throughout the movie.
The actor’s quip came about as he and his ‘Hit Man’ co-star, Adria Arjona, engaged in a lighthearted exploration of each other’s belongings for InStyle’s ‘Let’s Unpack That’ video segment. As Arjona rummaged through Powell’s sleek black carry-on, she unsurprisingly uncovered a pair of Ray-Ban aviators, prompting Powell to playfully lament the lack of free merchandise despite his starring role in the supposed “Ray-Ban commercial.”

While Powell’s remarks were made in jest, they highlighted the undeniable connection between the film and the iconic sunglasses brand. The film, which also starred Tom Cruise donning his signature Ray-Ban aviators, provided ample opportunity for the sunglasses to take centre stage, further cementing their status as a symbol of cool and effortless style.
Beyond the sunglasses, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ also offered audiences a tantalising glimpse into Powell’s fitness journey. The actor revealed that he meticulously prepared for his shirtless scenes, a process he referred to as “greasing up” his abs. This attention to physicality is not uncommon for Powell, as evidenced by a friendly call-in from his former ‘Scream Queens’ co-star, John Stamos, who humorously attested to Powell’s penchant for shedding his clothes on set.
Stamos, the beloved ‘Full House’ alum, recalled a particular shower scene from their time on the Fox series, where Powell arrived on set in his birthday suit, much to the amusement of his castmates. This anecdote further solidified Powell’s dedication to his craft and his willingness to go the extra mile in pursuit of authenticity in his performances.
Powell’s commitment to maintaining his fit physique extends beyond the realms of acting. In a previous interview with Men’s Health, he candidly shared his approach to fitness, emphasising the importance of starting each day with physical activity to avoid a sense of playing catch-up. Additionally, Powell revealed his newfound appreciation for Pilates, which had yielded an unexpected and, as he humorously described it, “crowd-pleasing” result – the emergence of a previously unseen dimple in a rather unconventional location.
