Glen Powell Reflects on Intense ‘Twisters’ Action Scenes: ‘Jet Engine Blowing in My Face’

Preparing for his role in ‘Twisters’ was no walk in the park for Glen Powell—it was more like facing the full force of a tornado.

In the sequel to the 1996 hit film ‘Twister’, the 35-year-old star of ‘Anyone But You’ takes on the role of Tyler Owens, a daring storm-chaser who documents his adventures on social media. To capture the intensity of Owens’ encounters with the tornadoes, Powell found himself subjected to the power of jet engines and flying debris in Oklahoma.

“I was blasted with every jet engine and debris they could find in Oklahoma, thrown through the air, and dragged across the ground more than I anticipated,” Powell reveals in PEOPLE’s latest issue, which previews the summer’s hottest movies. He humorously reflects, “I’m not sure I even remember how to act without a giant jet engine blowing in my face anymore. It’s become a necessity for me as a performer.”

Powell, known for his role in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, describes the adrenaline rush on action movie sets, especially when capturing high-octane scenes. Director Lee Issac Chung (Minari) doesn’t cut corners when it comes to filming these intense sequences.

“Lee is a filmmaker who tells his actors, ‘This might be a bit painful. You’ll probably look shell-shocked by the end of the day, but the audience will feel it differently,'” Powell explains. “That’s what makes this experience so special. It’s going to be a thrilling ride for audiences.”

While Powell remains tight-lipped about any Easter eggs or original cast cameos in Twisters, he assures fans that the film will deliver excitement. Meanwhile, audiences can catch his other summer movie, ‘Hit Man’, on Netflix, where he co-wrote and stars in the true story of a college professor moonlighting as a fake hitman to help New Orleans police nab criminals.

In ‘Hit Man’, Powell showcases his versatility by portraying multiple characters. “I think I get to play around 10 characters,” he shares. “For an actor, there’s no greater joy than showing up to work and just playing pretend.”

‘Hit Man’ streams on Netflix starting 7th June, while ‘Twisters’ storms into theatres on 19th July.
