'Barbie' garnered an impressive eight nominations for the upcoming Oscars, yet Greta Gerwig, the film's director and its star, Margot Robbie, found themselves notably absent from the 'Best Director' and 'Best Actress' categories. In an interview for its 'Women of the Year' issue, Gerwig addressed the nominations, expressing her desire for Robbie to receive recognition, stating, “Of course I wanted it for Margot."
Gerwig added, "But I’m just happy we all get to be there together," hinting at the camaraderie among the film's cast and crew. Despite the absence of a nomination for 'Best Director,' Gerwig finds solace in her nomination for 'Best Adapted Screenplay,' a category she shares with her husband, Noah Baumbach, with whom she co-wrote the movie.

Meanwhile, Robbie received a nomination for 'Best Picture' as a co-producer of 'Barbie,' alongside her husband Tom Ackerley and their co-producers David Heyman and Robbie Brenner.
Reflecting on the nominations, Gerwig shared an anecdote about a friend's reaction, illustrating the mixed emotions that can accompany such recognition. Robbie, too, addressed the Oscar nominations at a special Screen Actors Guild screening of 'Barbie,' expressing gratitude for the film's success and her involvement in it.
Both Gerwig and Robbie received public support from their fellow 'Barbie' nominees, including Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera. Gosling, who plays Ken opposite Robbie's Barbie in the film, praised their contributions, emphasising their essential roles in the movie's creation and success.
In his statement, Ryan Gosling expressed deep disappointment over the absence of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie from their respective Oscar nomination categories, emphasising that his sentiment far exceeds mere disappointment. Gosling went on to convey his immense happiness for America Ferrera and the other remarkable artists involved in the making of 'Barbie.'
