GTA 6 Dropped Its First Trailer, Reveals 2025 Release Window

Rockstar pulled a fast one on eager gamers by dropping the ‘GTA’ 6 reveal trailer a day ahead of schedule. The sneak peek at the highly-anticipated game not only confirmed earlier leaks and rumours but also unveiled that GTA 6 will feature a female protagonist for the first time in the franchise. Set to hit stores in 2025, this latest addition promises a fresh take on the iconic series.

Originally slated for a 5th December debut at 9 am ET, a low-res version of the full trailer surfaced on Twitter approximately 16 hours before its intended premiere, courtesy of a now-vanished account named GTA6TrailerLeak. Rockstar, quick on the draw, retaliated by unleashing the official trailer on YouTube a day early.

The trailer, set to Tom Petty’s ‘Love is a Long Road,’ kicks off with a scenic view of a swamp bridge at sunset, followed by glimpses of what seems to be the Vice City Penitentiary. The fourth shot features a correctional officer posing a question to a Latina woman named Lucia in an orange prison jumpsuit. Her calm reply, “Bad luck, I guess,” sets the tone for the unfolding drama.

As the trailer progresses, the spotlight shifts to Vice City, with shots of its beach, marshes, nightclub, and even a boat cruising through vibrant waters. The Viceport Boatyard and the GTA 6 version of Ocean Drive make cameo appearances, offering fans a taste of the game’s setting. Intriguingly, the trailer hints at dual protagonists, with Lucia being the first confirmed character, while the male lead remains nameless but is rumoured to be called Jason.

The climax reveals the official ‘GTA’ 6 logo, an outrun-style Roman numeral for six and the bombshell that the game is eyeing a 2025 release. Take-Two’s financial reports align with this timeframe, hinting at a launch by the end of the fiscal year. However, a mischievous teaser suggesting a 1st April 2025 release date adds an element of uncertainty, especially given the date’s association with April Fools’ Day.

PC gamers might need to brace themselves for disappointment, as the trailer and official announcements only mention current-gen consoles as initial platforms. Rockstar’s historical trend of delayed PC releases, coupled with insider reports of a “more buggy” PC version, raises concerns about a similar fate for ‘GTA’ 6.

This echoes Rockstar’s track record, where PC ports of 3D ‘GTA’ entries lagged behind console releases by significant margins. The gap has only widened over the years, with ‘GTA’ 5’s PC version arriving more than 18 months after the original release. While the reasons for these delays are varied, including technical challenges and prioritizing console versions, the prospect of history repeating itself looms large for ‘GTA’ 6.
