Halsey released a dramatic live video for her new single “I Am Not a Woman, I’m a God” on the 18th of September, in which she is splattered with blood while singing the track from her Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross-produced If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power album. The clip which was directed by Dani Vitale, begins with Halsey singing while staring intently at the camera as the stage flashes with coloured strobes that encompass her.

Clad in a white, toga-like dress, the pop star maintains eye contact while singing, “I am not a woman, I’m a god/ I am not a martyr, I’m a problem/ I am not a legend, I’m a fraud/ Keep your heart ’cause I already.” Around halfway through, she starts getting splashed with dark cherry-coloured fake blood, and towards the end of the song, it’s dripping down into her mouth, creating an eerie Greco-Roman statuesque silhouette of savagery. A pretty dope visual!

In sharp contrast to the song’s noble yet ominous original visual, which shows Halsey claiming her power, this new version is reflective of the inner turbulence of the song’s lyrics. “Every day, I got a smile where my frown goes,” she sings in the first version. “A couple bodies in the garden where the grass grows.”

If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It’s a great achievement in Halsey’s career as a visionary artist, which is why it came with a short film to accompany its release.

Halsey’s new album, which was previewed with no pre-release singles, dropped late last month. In a four-star review of the albumNME wrote: “The music is fierce and fascinating. Produced by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ has cinematic moments that recall the duo’s gritty film scores, but isn’t simply ‘Halsey does industrial rock’. Frankly, it’s more complex and unexpected than that.”
